Since the 1970s, Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC roofing has been used as a commercial roofing product throughout the US. What is commonly thought of as a solid plastic product, PVC roofing membranes have plasticizers added to the base product to produce a flexible material that can be installed on commercial roofs. Also known as vinyl roofing, PVC is a single-ply thermoplastic roofing membrane.
The term thermoplastic explains the ability of the PVC membranes to be fused together using hot air welding. The intense heat of the weld gun fuses each membrane to the other creating seams that are highly resistant to water and moisture. When completed, the entire roof is essentially one large single roofing membrane.
Beyond the monolithic quality of fusing roofing membranes together, PVC roofing has additional qualities that make it an ideal product for commercial applications:
- Available in several different colors
- Rates good in flexibility at lower temperatures
- Excellent fire resistance and lowers consequential spread of fire
- High impact and puncture resistance with a high threshold breaking point — 350lbs per inch
- Resists chemical damage, mold, algae and roof top dirt
- High wind and uplift resistance
- Three installation methods — mechanical, ballast, or fully adhered
